When exposed to stress – such as nutrient deficiency or heat -, bacteria allow their metabolism to take a break during which they suppress, for example, the incorporation of proteins into membranes. This break allows the microorganisms to slow down their cellular processes and metabolism so they can recover as soon as conditions become more favorable, as researchers out of Marburg, Freiburg and Munich found out.
While 52% to 75% of employees – depending on survey strategy and occupation type – have been experiencing burnout in 2021, we could take a reminder from the world’s smallest organisms on how to deal with stress: Slow down until conditions become more favorably again, for example by cutting back all activities that are not needed to overcome your current stressor.
